FoodSwitch

Our Story

FoodSwitch was developed in Australia by The George Institute for Global Health in 2012. FoodSwitch was initially launched to address the lack of clear front-of-pack labelling on many foods. It quickly gained popularity, with about 400,000 downloads in its first 18 months. The app uses a Health Star Rating that scores products on a 0.5 to 5-star scale alongside a “traffic light system” to label foods based on levels of fat, sugar, and salt.

Over time, the app has expanded to multiple countries, including the U.K., the U.S., and China, allowing it to track nutrition trends and monitor the impact of dietary policies worldwide.

Our Purpose, Vision, and Goal

The purpose of FoodSwitch is to “Bring transparency to the health and sustainability of the world’s food supply”.  By doing this, we want to impact consumer choice, government policy and industry practice to have an optimised food system for human health and the health of our planet. Our goal is to improve the health and sustainability for 1 billion people around the world.
